How to Generate Lorem Ipsum Text for Website Mockups (Without Breaking Your Flow)

Last week I was mocking up a landing page and realized I'd been typing "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" from memory for the third time. I got maybe five words in before I had to Google the rest. Again.

This happens constantly when you're designing. You need text that looks real enough to judge spacing and hierarchy, but you don't have the actual copy yet. Sometimes you won't have it for weeks.

Why do designers use Lorem Ipsum instead of real words?

The short answer: it doesn't distract.

If you fill a mockup with "This is some text. Here is more text. Text goes here," your client will focus on how boring your writing is instead of looking at the layout. If you use real content about your client's business that you made up, they'll spend the entire review meeting correcting facts instead of approving the design.

Lorem Ipsum looks like text. It has varied word lengths, normal letter frequency, and realistic sentence structure. But it's Latin-ish gibberish, so nobody reads it. They see "text block" and move on to evaluating what actually matters: does this layout work?

The original Lorem Ipsum comes from a Cicero text written in 45 BC. Someone scrambled it in the 1500s for a type specimen book. Designers have been using it ever since because it does one job really well: it fills space without saying anything.

What's the fastest way to generate Lorem Ipsum?

Depends on your workflow. If you're already in Figma or Adobe XD, most design tools have Lorem Ipsum built in. In Figma, you can install plugins like "Content Reel" that generate it with a click.

But honestly, I'm usually working in a browser anyway. I'll have my design tool open, a Google Doc with notes, maybe some reference sites. Switching to another app feels like friction.

I use Lorem Ipsum Generator because it's right there in my browser. You pick paragraphs, words, or bytes, click generate, and copy. Takes about three seconds. No account, no download, nothing leaves your browser.

Lipsum.com is the classic option. It's been around forever and does the same thing. Both work fine. I prefer the JustUse.me version because I'm already using other tools there, but use whatever's already in your bookmarks.

How much placeholder text should you generate?

This is where people mess up. They generate five paragraphs for a hero section that'll only ever have two sentences.

I usually start with real content length estimates. If the final hero headline will be 8-12 words, I generate 10 words of Lorem Ipsum. If the body section needs three paragraphs, I generate three paragraphs.

Here's a rough guide I follow:

• Hero headline: 5-10 words
• Hero subheading: 15-25 words
• Feature card: 1 paragraph (50-80 words)
• About section: 3-4 paragraphs (300-400 words)
• Testimonial: 2-3 sentences (30-50 words)

You can always add more later. It's easier to expand than to delete and reflow everything.

One trick: use the Word Counter to check your generated text. If you need exactly 75 words for a section, generate a bit extra, paste it into the counter, and trim to the exact length. Sounds fussy, but it makes mockups way more realistic.

Should you use Lorem Ipsum alternatives?

There are dozens of Lorem Ipsum alternatives now. Bacon Ipsum (meat-themed), Hipster Ipsum (ironic phrases), Cupcake Ipsum (desserts), whatever.

I've tried them. They're fun for about five minutes. Then they become a problem.

The issue is that themed placeholder text is readable. Your brain can't help but read "Bacon pancetta short loin beef ribs" and think about food. Now you're distracted. Your client is distracted. Someone will definitely make a joke about it in the review meeting.

Stick with regular Lorem Ipsum for client work. Save the novelty generators for internal projects where everyone knows it's a joke.

The one exception: if you're designing for a specific industry and need realistic character counts for technical terms, generate real content. A healthcare app mockup filled with Lorem Ipsum won't show you that medical terminology takes up way more space than normal words.

What about generating Lorem Ipsum in different languages?

Standard Lorem Ipsum is pseudo-Latin, which uses similar character widths and word lengths to English. That's fine for English-language designs.

But if you're designing for German, Russian, or Japanese, Lorem Ipsum will lie to you. German words are longer. Japanese characters are denser. Russian uses Cyrillic. Your spacing will be completely wrong.

For non-English mockups, generate placeholder text in the actual target language. Google Translate can help here. Grab a Wikipedia article in your target language, run it through a translator to verify it's generic content, and use that as filler.

Some Lorem Ipsum generators offer multi-language options, but I find it easier to just grab real text samples. You get accurate character density and word length without hunting for specialized tools.

Can you generate Lorem Ipsum with HTML formatting?

Most generators give you plain text. If you need HTML paragraphs with <p> tags, you'll need to either wrap it yourself or find a generator with HTML output options.

The JustUse.me Lorem Ipsum Generator outputs plain text, which I actually prefer. I'm usually pasting into a design tool or CMS that handles formatting automatically. Adding HTML tags just means I have to strip them out.

If you're building a static HTML mockup and need formatted Lorem Ipsum, Lipsum.com has an option to generate with <p> tags. Or just use a find-and-replace: paste your Lorem Ipsum, find double line breaks, replace with </p><p>, and add opening and closing tags at the start and end.

How do you remember to replace Lorem Ipsum before launch?

You don't want to be the developer who shipped "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" to production. It happens more than you'd think.

I keep a pre-launch checklist that includes "Search codebase for 'lorem'". Takes 10 seconds. Catches placeholder text every time.

In WordPress or other CMS projects, I also search the database. Sometimes Lorem Ipsum hides in draft posts, widget areas, or theme customizer settings that don't show up in a file search.

The nuclear option: use a linter or pre-commit hook that blocks any commit containing "lorem ipsum". Probably overkill for most projects, but if you've shipped placeholder text more than once, it might be worth it.

Does Lorem Ipsum hurt SEO?

Only if you accidentally publish it. Google doesn't penalize you for having Lorem Ipsum in development environments or staging sites, but if it makes it to your live site, that page will rank for nothing. It's gibberish. There's nothing for Google to index.

I've seen designers put Lorem Ipsum in image alt text during mockups and forget to replace it. That's worse than no alt text because it actively confuses screen readers and gives Google useless information.

Set a reminder. Add it to your launch checklist. Whatever it takes. Lorem Ipsum is perfect for mockups and terrible for everything else.

The whole point of placeholder text is that it's temporary. Generate what you need, design around it, and replace it the moment real content is ready. That's it.
