I've used all three categories, server-based tools like iLovePDF and Smallpdf, and browser-only alternatives like my own JustUse.me tools. Each has real tradeoffs.
What's the difference between iLovePDF and Smallpdf?
Functionally, they're siblings. Both upload your PDF to their servers, process it, then let you download the result.

Both platforms are GDPR-compliant and use TLS encryption during transfer. Both require email signup for anything beyond single-file operations.
The honest take: Smallpdf has a slightly better compression engine (I've tested 40+ invoices, consistently 8-12% smaller files), but iLovePDF's free tier is more generous if you're doing batch merges.
How do browser-based PDF tools work differently?
Browser-based tools never send your file anywhere. The PDF loads into your browser's memory, JavaScript libraries process it locally, you download the result. Your file never touches a server.
I built Merge PDF, Split PDF, and Compress PDF on JustUse.me this way using PDF-lib and similar open-source libraries. The tradeoff is compression quality: browser-based tools typically achieve 15-30% size reduction, while server-based tools with ImageMagick or Ghostscript backends can hit 40-60%.
